WELCOME TO SMALL STREAM FLYFISHERS
The beautiful and rewarding challenge of fly fishing for trout on small streams
ABOUT US
We are a small fly fishing club with a passion for small streams and the conservation of trout and their habitat.
Our waters, in the heart of the English countryside on the border between Staffordshire and Derbyshire south of Ashbourne, offer a unique and beautiful location for the most challenging and yet at the same time most rewarding fly fishing there is.
The video in the sections below is shot entirely on the wooded beat of our water.
OUR WATERS
AN OUTSTANDING AND NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL RIVER VALLEY LOCATION HAVING STRICTLY PRIVATE ACCESS
The river runs through farmland, private land and woodland. It is a naturally beautiful area with the surrounding woodland having an abundance of flora and fauna including bluebells, wild garlic, owl, buzzard, kingfisher and wild deer.
WILD BROWN TROUT
The river contains a strong natural population of wild brown trout which spawn in the river and vary in size from fingerlings to larger fish of 13-14"
THREE BEATS WITH A COMPLETE VARIETY OF WATER
The three beats on the river are markedly different. Through farmland with the meandering river enclosed by trees, through beautiful undisturbed woodland to managed pastures. Its a beautiful place just to be.
RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
Stalking wild brown trout in a small riffling steam, flicking a dry fly in eager anticipation of a take and when they are not showing perhaps searching the deeper holes with a nymph. Learning to slow your actions moving slowly and quietly like nature itself so as not to spook your quarry. Searching out the likely lies then keeping low to avoid being seen, all the time trying to present and control the fly naturally in the most complex and yet intricately beautiful of casting environments, This is the challenge of small stream fishing.
So long as you remain low, not breaking the sky line with a silhouette you can often cast several times and still the fish will take and when they take there will be no mistaking it as the short line gives immediate contact.
Flicks and roll casts go hand in hand with conventional casting, make no mistake small streams will test and most importantly hone your skills. A short self loading rod is a great help and a 6X tippet will help you retrieve most of those flies when the casting doesn't quite go to plan. The stronger tippet can also help hold a fish away from the many snags available to it in a small stream, it can be pretty explosive and exciting stuff.
It's not for beginners even the experienced can find the transition to small streams daunting, but with patience you’ll soon find your casts improving along with your skills and dexterity with the rod, you’ll be honing a lifetime skill that translates directly to delivering a fly naturally to smaller tight swims, the sort that, even on bigger rivers, often hold the biggest of fish.
This is a quiet and uninterrupted fishing in quiet and private landscape with the river set in a unique and beautiful part of the countryside. Tree lined, wooded and meandering open field beats provide a variety of challenges with wild garlic and bluebells lining the banks in spring, your only company may be the occasional wild deer kingfisher or buzzard but everywhere there are truly wild trout.
